So one of the most asked Question before and after starting Med school (with sjsm or other most other Caribbean school) which state can i obtain residency in. So this is the recent information that I obtained From SJSM hope it helps everyone

Below are the states you can't get Residency in:

St. James - 11 States
Alabama
California and All the states on California list
Florida
Indiana*
Georgia
New York
New Mexico
North Dakota
Porto Rico
Texas
Vermont

* California list: you would have to do more research on that I am not 100% certain of it

Canada
I was told my SJSM advisor that all the provinces of Canada are approved and there hasn't been any issues so far

Hope this helps

  1. Hi,

Doesn't New Jersey follow New York approval or are we able to match there?

  2. I asked SJSM today (9/4/2014) and this is what Marta told me is the full list of states that we can not do a residency in (13 states):

    Alabama
    Alaska
    California
    Florida
    Georgia
    Indiana
    Kansas
    New Mexico
    North Dakota
    Porto Rico
    Tennessee
    Texas
    Vermont

She also says that we cannot practice later on in NY, but students were accepted for residency there.

  3. Hi, thanks for the list medstulife! Aren't TN + GA IMG friendly? I heard SJSM use to have rotations in GA before.

What does it mean you can't practice in NY? Did some new rule or law happen? What if you did your residency in another state and are board certified and wanted to move back to NY with your family?

  6. HI,

    Sorry about the late response,
you have to call school and speak to Martha but she gave me different answers the next times i called, So IN NY you can get residency but you cant do rotations there , ad she said once u finish residency you have to go to another state to get license, there is alot of do and Don't BUT i shared the list that was mentioned to me and SJSM have no problem what so ever.

Regarding GA, we had rotations there but we dont anymore and there hospitals have different criteria so better to speak to martha or residency director before applying same with TEXAS

  7. So if you are not able to obtain residency in those states, does it mean you won't be able to license in those states as well??

    1. So what i was told was that, if you can do residency in ACGME appoved (which is almost all the residency spots in US) u can get license in state with easy licencing requirements, offcourse i would suggest you run this wby school before making a permanent decision.

  9. Hello,

I just was accepted to the program for Spring 2015. My parents are looking for more answered questions to make sure they are not helping out with a program that will land me jobless. What has been your experience thus far? Pros/cons? Things I should think about before accepting my spot at SJSM?

    Thank you
