AICM: Internal medicine

By Unknown - Sunday, January 8, 2012 7 Comments
There is so many things going on, so much to do and Internal medicine with the on calls takes a lot out of the person. Anywayz a quick summary on Internal medicine.

I have to admit this was the most useful of our rotations because we got alot to do, there was a lot of experience with the patients, gave a great feel of what the life possibly holds in the future and motivated to push harder to attain the goal of being a doctor.
So unlike other rotations, Internal medicine is 5 days a week, and it starts 7 am with the morning report. In the morning report the residents usually present a case and a discussion takes place, its interesting and we have to attend it. After that you meet the residents at the 2nd floor, 2 East location, where you have the patients in their room. Just go to the residents room (the room with a lot of computers) and let them know you are 5th semester students. Depending on the patient, you will be asked to do a couple of things, most of the times you will be taking the new patient history and presenting to the patient.

You will already have a hand out from the AICM administration make sure to use that and also do a good physical exam, after that you will report to the resident who will most of the times then go back with you and confirm everything and this way you also get to correct the mistakes you might have made while taking the history.
You might be asked to do do mini mental exam for some patient and also depression exam.

Couple of things to remember:

  • Make sure to read the patient chart before you go to the room (if you can't find it ask the nurses)
  • Read any important instructions outside the room of the patient
    • You might have to wear special protective wear before you attend to the patient
  • Residents don't tell you this and many students tend to forget make sure you take the vitals for the patients.
  • Be nice and polite

Overall, i really enjoyed Internal Medicine and had a lot to learn

And don't Forget to :

  1. I'm impressed, I must say. Very rarely do I come across a blog thats both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. Your thoughts is outstanding; the matter is something that not a lot of people are talking intelligently about. I am really happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this.
