Books and Studying Ahead

By Med stu - Saturday, November 6, 2010 8 Comments
Hello there
I've been reading your blog and I wanted to thank you for taking the time to share your experience thus far with students :) I will be starting in January and I have a few questions about books/studying. I received a letter from the school outling the books used in the first semester however I was told by current students that we will not use the books. Is this true? if books are not mandatory, how do you study? are lecture notes sufficient for the exam? what happens if lec. notes are not very detailed and u need further clarifications?
Are there any specific books that you recommend buying before heading to the island? do you recommend studying/going over certain topics before starting MD1?
Also, this question is not very important but just out of curiosity, what GPA do you have to have in order to be on the dean's list? I noticed a list of students under the News section on the new website....
Thank yo so much!

Hey,
Thank you for reading the blog and my pleasure.
Yes, what you have heard is true, almost no one i know uses the books that we are told at the time of admission, everything that is tested is from the notes and if you need some further clarification or detail BRS books are used. But most of the studying is done just from the lectures notes that are provided by the teachers in each class.
Yes, there are actually many books that you can buy before coming down to the island for the purpose of clarification of notes and to study better for the USMLE, the books that students should buy before coming are listed HERE , and if you can get the BRS books before then read them before coming down the island, will really give you a head start.
We use percentage system down here in order to the on the dean's list you need to be the top 2 or 3 students in the class.

Good luck for January,
